Conclusion

As her citation reads, Toni Morrison, “who, in the novels characterized byvisionary force and poetic import, gives life to an essential aspect of American reality.”(Allén, 2007: 301) Toni Morrison has given great concern for American reality as anAfrican-American writer. For her, “[b]lack people who are writing must concentrateon the political plight of Black people.” (Black Creation Annual, 1994: 3) Morrisontook her responsibility as a Black writer. She has devoted herself to writing somethingthat “the other Black people could understand it and that white people, if it was anygood, would understand it also.” (qtd. in Bakerman, 1994: 38) Racism has alwaysbeen a prominent problem in the United States. Suffering from sorts of racialdiscrimination, the Black Americans live hard under the oppression of racism.Morrison not only paid attention to the racial damage of white racists imposed on theblack American but also the internalization of racism of the black self. In The BluestEye, Morrison represented racism’s damage by examining the destructive effects ofthe aesthetic standards and values on the black people. Through investigating thetragedy of Pecola, Morrison revealed that the distortion of black people was caused bythe internalization of white standards and the negation of their racial identity.

Meanwhile, Morrison is also an outstanding master in the narrative field. StureAllén has evaluated Morrison as that “[t]he reader derives vast pleasure from hersuperb narrative technique, shifting from novel to novel and marked by originaldevelopment, although it is related to Faulkner and to the Latin American tradition.”(Allén, 2007: 299) By using specific narrative techniques, Toni Morrison presentedthe sufferings of African Americans in the white people dominated society. Besides,“Morrison’s writing is distinctive for it probes and fleshes out within narrative andcharacterization ideas about which she is curious.
