关键词:《献给爱米丽的一朵玫瑰》写作风格分析William Faulkner’s Writing StyleA Rose for Emily美国文学
摘要:A Rose for Emily, Faulkner pursues an artistic writing style which is connected closely with the realistic world. He brings the questions to readers not only through the simple fact but his complex form, which always make readers immersed with his thought.
“lifting its stubborn and coquettish decay.” We can feel how incompatible atmosphere is it. Several years later, the deputation has a chance to go into Emily’s house for the first time. They go into “a dim hall from which a stairway mounted into still more shadow.” (杨立民,2006:104) Moreover, there is “a dust and disuse, a close, dank smell” (杨立民,2006:104) in the air. The parlor is “furnished in heavy, leather covered furniture.” (杨立民,2006:104) Faulkner describes a dim and mysterious picture for us.
It is really shocking what the town people see in Emily’s base room. “A thin acrid pall as of the tomb seemed to lie everywhere upon this room decked and furnished as a bridal.”(杨立民,2006:110) The second pillow which is in the same bed was the indentation of a head. It is very clearly who sleeps on it because of Emily’s “long strand of iron – gray hair”. Homer has been disappeared for forty years, and Emily had been slept with his skeleton for forty years. A sepulchral atmosphere spreads the air. It is shocking and absolutely terrified. But it is not Faulkner who originally adds the terror element in fiction; it is the traditional style of “gothic fiction.” Faulkner not only uses this style in A Rose for Emily, but also exaggerates several details, such as murder, violence, etc.
IV. The Technique of Time Inversion
Another feature is the violation of chronology in the narrative structure. Instead of being told the story from her birth to her death, we get the first impression of Emily’s funeral. This is the first section of the novel. Additionally, it includes a description of the history behind the town's relations to Miss Emily. The narrator comments: “Miss Emily had been a tradition, a duty, and a care; a sort of hereditary obligation upon the town”. This obligation began in the year 1894 when Miss Emily's father died; he left her nothing but the house. That year the town's mayor told Miss Emily she was exempt from all taxes because the town owed her father. Miss Emily began to accept his exemption and the tradition. As this section comes to an end, a new mayor tries to get Miss Emily to start paying taxes, the conflict between Emily and “next generation” take place, but she refuses. Then Board of Aldermen with three gray beads and a younger man sprinkles lime to conceal her crime, and they still feel really sorry for her. In fact the board belongs to the old generation with a rising generation. They want to keep the south myth of woman’s purity. This is Emily’s victory in surviving the modern society.
The second section of A Rose for Emily describes Miss Emily's life shortly after her father's death. This section displays Miss Emily as a woman in deep denial. She actually tries to hide her father's dead body, but the wretched smell eventually drives the town to intervene: “Just as they were about to resort to law and force, she broke down, and they buried her father quickly”. (杨立民,2006:105)
We know Emily’s love story after her father’s death. She decides to enter into that nether-world. When her father is alive, she has been frustrated by her father, prevented from participation in the life of her contemporaries. Now she finally achieves freedom for herself. This section – section three, goes on to introduce Homer Barron, a "Yankee" construction worker, who is brought to town as the foreman of a company for paving the sidewalks of Jeffer
