关键词:《献给爱米丽的一朵玫瑰》写作风格分析William Faulkner’s Writing StyleA Rose for Emily美国文学
摘要:A Rose for Emily, Faulkner pursues an artistic writing style which is connected closely with the realistic world. He brings the questions to readers not only through the simple fact but his complex form, which always make readers immersed with his thought.
son. Miss Emily quickly grows fond of Homer, and they begin spending every Sunday together. The town could not understand Miss Emily's relationship with Homer; they start to call her “Poor Emily”.
Over a year later Miss Emily goes to the drugstore and bought arsenic. The druggist asked Miss Emily what her intentions are for this poison, but she does not answer him. The fourth section begins with the town's speculations of Miss Emily's need for poison. The narrator states, “So the next day we all said, 'She will kill herself'; and we said it would be the best thing” (杨立民,2006:108). After this initial reaction, the women of the town decide Miss Emily's suicide would be a disgrace. The ladies force the Baptist Minister to visit Miss Emily. Although he would never say what happens that day, he would not go back. The minister's wife then decides to write Miss Emily's estranged relatives in Alabama, and in return two of her female cousins came for a visit, and Homer disappears. After some time, the cousins go back to Alabama, and Homer went back to Miss Emily. The narrator says that is the last time Homer is ever seen.
In the last chapter, we turn back to the occasion when Emily died. The narrator says that her "Negro" servant opens Miss Emily's door and vanishes forever. The funeral is held on the second day after Miss Emily's death. Upon her burial, the townspeople begin an inspection of the house that is closed for the last ten years. What they find is astonishing. Miss Emily has been hiding Homer's dead body. He is laid in a bed; next to him is an imprint, and one of her long gray hairs. This macabre picture exposes to us. A rotted body “had become inextricable from the bed in which he lay.” It is the unfaithfulness of Homer that represents the final act in the drama of Emily’s struggle to escape from the past. From the moment that she realizes that he would desert her, tradition becomes magnified out of all proportion to life and death, and she conducts herself as though Homer really has been faithful.
The non-chronological order intends to keep the form and the idea fluid and unfinished, and to stress his sense of the contemporaneity of past, present and future and his heeling of life as recurrent motion. Sometimes we find difficult to read the story, we can realize Emily is a murderer. But in every part of the story, a few foreshadowing is given: Emily buy arsenic, the smell of her house develops, and Homer disappears after “the Negro man admitted him at the kitchen door at dusk one evening”. All of these arouse our feeling of urgency. In the shift of time sequence, we find the idea is always in motion, until the dropping into place of the very last syllable. It may make difficulties for the readers. However it also makes us appreciate Faulkner’s unique writing skills in controlling the theme.
Ⅴ. Faulkner’s Charm in Writing Style
Faulkner often describes himself as “just a farmer who likes to tell stories.” His style, however, is that of a consummately skilled craftsman. William Faulkner is good at using various writing styles, such as mythic characters, symbolism, complex stories, southern Gothic, complicated conflicts both in inner heart and with others, time inversion, stream of consciousness and so on. His luxuriant prose style and complicated plot structure make some of his works difficult to read. Although his writing style is intric
