Thethesis focuses on the analysis of the translation essence (Intentional interaction,Interpersonal interaction, Communicative action, Intercultural action andText-processing action) based on the three rules by giving abundant examples intranslation practice and the corresponding translation strategies. All of these support thefact that Skopos theory suits the E-C news translation practice from the aspects of lexis,sentence and passage.A Study on Chinese Translation of Journalistic English by Xiaoqing, Xu in 2003introduces the effective way of combining the translation theories and E-C newstranslation practice. This thesis focuses on the combination of semantic translation andcommunicative translation from the aspects of lexis translation, sentence translation andpassage translation, and also points out the importance of cross-culture.All the three theses mentioned above use the Skopos Theory as the guidingtranslation theory in analyzing some examples. However, it is not enough in newstranslation practice, especially E-C news translation. Inspired by all of these, the authorwants to do some further research on E-C news translation under Skopos Theory.

Chapter Two Literature Review

2.1 Translation Theories Adopted in News Translation
There’s no doubt that news translation is of great importance. Obviously, manyscholars pay much attention to news translation by adopting various theories. In thefollowing part, the author lists some important theories adopted in news translationaccording to my collections.

(1) The Relevance Theory
From the relevance theory, translation is an ostensive-inferential and translatorstry to gain the goal of optimal relevance. Two relevance, cognitive principle andcommunicative principle explain why the optimal relevance should be gained in newstranslation. It is the very communication between the original writer of the sourcelanguage and the readers of the target text. As one of the news translation theoriesguidance, in fact, there are a lot of theses about that. As far as I know, based onrelevance theory by Sperber and Wilson, and relevance translation theory by Gutt andsome Chinese translation scholars, Ge Zhuqing makes every effort “to study Chinese toEnglish soft news translation from the cognitive perspective. Through analyzing somenews examples in Chinese and their English versions, the author tries to find out theapplicability of relevance theory to news translation and provide some specificstrategies in the practice of soft news translation”(Ge Zhuqing, 2009).

(2) The Register Theory
Register is firstly introduced by Reid and has been developed later by Halliday.According to Halliday, translation is the equivalence of context of situation not the formin essence. Translators should try their best to represent the register characteristics ofthe source text. There are three parameters (a) tenor of discourse: (b) mode of discourse(c) domain of discourse. In Wang Zhijuan’s opinion, the maintenance of register is veryimportant in news translation and should be chosen very carefully, since thecommunicative tools, content and styles vary from each other (Wang Zhijuan, 2002).
