  翻译总是有它自己的翻译作品能沟通的相同或类似的消息,原来打算的读者通告要获取作为自己的终极理想。为了实现这一目标,就需要提供足够的背景信息,原来的作者希望读者在阅读的时候心里有源文本(ST)。Translators always have it as their ultimate ideal that their translation works cancommunicate the same or similar message that the original authors intend the readers toreceive. In order to achieve this goal, they need to provide enough background informationthat the original authors expect the readers to have in mind when they read the source text(ST). Suppose the footnotes are unnecessary for readers, some translators have to include allof the needed background information within the target text (TT). As a result, the expandedtranslation may place the translator in a dilemma. Readers are apt to criticize the expandedtranslation as being unfaithful to the original text. Then they may consider the wholetranslation as unacceptable.Some translators may fail to provide any needed background information. https://www.51lunwen.org/translation/ They want tomake their translation appear much the same as the ST. However, this leaves the TT readerswith a serious problem. The original author shares the same cultural background with STreaders. He does n’t need to give an explanation to those cultural words. They are left unsaid.Once the writing is introduced to TT readers, there must be some cultural gap among them.The TT readers without that knowledge will often miss the point. They may consider the TTto be so obscure that they will just give up the struggle to understand it. Thus, getting thetranslation accepted by the TT readers is a tough thing to do.Some may argue that it is not proper to add any background information in thetranslation; otherwise, it will be unfaithful to the ST. However, considering the TT readers’acceptability and the communicative effect, if there is not any, they will be confused halfway and lose their interest in further reading. If the background information is not included,then the TT readers have to obtain it from other channels, like to be taught beforehandthrough supplemental books or by well-trained teachers. If not, they should have aconvenient access to get the background information immediately whenever they encounterdifficulty in the reading process.Anyway, readers must be offered some background information to better understand theST. Then in what way is this information presented? Footnote-making is a feasible method.On one hand, it is separated from the main translated text. The translators don’t need toembed the background information and communicative message into the main translated text,which will make the sentences tedious and wordy. On the other hand, it reminds TT readersof the key information which will influence their reading experience while it also keeps themain text concise and brief.Though footnote-making is so useful, translation theorists are usually expressing theirideas about how to do perfect translation from many other perspectives rather than from theangle of footnoting. The study of footnote in English-Chinese translation is almost a blank intranslation history. Footnote-making can be an important translation research subject, butjust a few people notice it.
