Conclusion 

Through the analysis of Zhang Guruo’s (1991) translation of The Return of the Native from the perspective of thick translation, the author has a clear idea about the strategies of thick translation in Zhang’s translation and the reasons behind the thick translation. Moreover, she also makes a conclusion of this research in this chapter.In this thesis, the author analyzes Zhang’s translation of The Return of the Native from the perspective of thick translation as a translation strategy and hoping that it may  be  an  inspiration  for  further  researches  on  translations  of  The  Return  of  the Native and other literary works. As far as the thesis is concerned, the author catches hold  of  the  special  characteristic  in  Zhang’s  translation  and  studies  on  it  from  the perspective of thick translation, which can be regarded as the most obvious feature in his translation of The Return of the Native.  From  the  whole  view  of  Zhang’s  translation  of  The  Return  of  the  Native, the strategies of thick translations in Zhang’s translation can be separated into three types: first, an intended preface is provided in the front of the translation. Zhang presents the preface of thick translation from four aspects: Hardy’s writing essence, Hardy’s origin of thoughts about writing The Return of the Native, the introduction of general plot as well  as  artistic  characteristics  in  Hardy’s  The  Return  of  the  Native;  second,  thick translation appears in the forms of additions in text. Zhang presents the additions of text from two aspects: in-text annotations and additions of explanation in text. From the aspect of in-text annotations, the author illustrates them through interpretation of reason, description of action, description of situation and additions of anaphora. From the  aspect  of  additions  of  explanation  in  text,  the  author  states  them  through explanatory  additions  of  hidden  meaning,  additions  of  sentences  and  additions  of rhetoric devices such as parallel structure, simile and personification; third, footnotes are appended at  the bottom  of  pages.
