g Wei’spoems to figure out translation strategies and several translation methods. As far as the research method is concerned, traditional scholars usually focus on theanalysis of Wang Wei’s poem from the perspective of relevance theory, receptionaesthetics, functional theories, operational theory and so on. However, different fromthe traditional approaches mentioned above, semiotic approach is adopted to studytranslation equivalence of Wang Wei’s poems in this thesis. Within the scope ofSemiotics, Morrisdivides meaning into semantic, syntactic and pragmatic meaning, which enable semiotics study to includeall the elements, namely, linguistics, pragmatics and cultural elements. That is to say, Semiotics analyzes all kinds ofphenomena in society and culture, including both verbal and nonverbal signs, whichmakes it possible for Semiotics to be the theoretical foundation of any otherdisciplines, including translation, which deals with processes of encoding anddecoding messages in different sign systems. This thesis will adopt semiotic approachto provide a more systematic, comprehensive and coherent study of translation ofWang Wei’s poetry. All in all, it is especially important for us to study theEnglish version of Wang Wei’spoems. Semiotic approach has earned itself a significant position in the practice oftranslation and can be applied to analyze English translation of Wang Wei’s poems, putting forward appropriate translation strategies and translation methods to helpbetter spread Wang Wei’s poems as well as Chinese culture to western countries.
