1 Task Description

1.1 Background of the Task

Biography is a kind of type of text that requires historicity and authenticity. It is the description of characters in the historical life, which demands the plots and records must conform to the history. Authors should adopt an objective attitude toward writing. Thus, the translator needs to repeatedly ensure personal emotions are handled appropriately. The central character of the original text, Jeanne Calment, has always been a very controversial figure in the world. In recent years, more and more controversy has arisen over her true lifespan. In April 2020, the translator read the text entitled “Living Proof” in New Yorker, and got more details about the life story of the Calment family and the arguments of some doubtful points. Deeply attracted by the excellent plots, the translator decided to try to translate the text into Chinese. In terms of professional knowledge background, this selected text involves some professional terms in the field of gerontology (such as CEPH, the SENS, the Gompertz law), which cause great difficulties for the translator. Therefore, when translating the sentences related to gerontology, the translator read some materials in gerontology to promote the understanding of the text.

During the translation, many parentheses with various functions used in the selected text become one of the biggest challenges. Therefore, in the process of translation, the translator needs to divide the sentence elements clearly and clarifies the logical relationship of sentences, so as to avoid misunderstanding. This report aims to conclude some appropriate strategies to translate parentheses in an appropriate way through case analysis, making the translation of parentheses better serve for the understanding of the whole text.

1.2 Introduction to the Source Text

This report is based on a biographical text of Living Proof with the legendary life of Jeanne Calment. Up to now there is no Chinese version. Biography is a kind of narrative text which records characters’ deeds and describes their life experiences in vivid language. The unity of authenticity and literariness is the basic feature of all biographies. The main character of this text, Jeanne Calment, was awarded the title of “the oldest person in the world” by Guinness World Records.
