Chapter One Introduction

1.1 Background

A memoir is to recall past events and write them into a book. To be precise, a memoir is a text of recollecting past life experiences and social activities of oneself or others, and it boasts documentary  value. A  memoir  is  a  true  portrayal  of  a  period  of  history  and  is  one  of  the indispensable  materials  for  a  comprehensive  study  of  chronological  history  and  academic achievements.

In the West, a very early time has seen the appearance of memoirs. In the fourth century BC, a student of the ancient Greek philosopher Socrates wrote a book that recorded Socrates' words and experiences in a complete and faithful manner. The title of the book was called 'Memoir', which showed that it may be the earliest book titled a memoir throughout human history.

In China, the development of writing memoirs also enjoys a very long history. For example, the Confucian classic 'The Analects' is a memoir-like work. Western Han historian Sima Qian's 'Preface to Taishi Gongzi' can also be regarded as a memoir. Some condolence articles and epitaphs written by ancients also share the nature of memoirs.

During modern times, the style of memoir has undergone a dramatic change. People who have  made  outstanding  contributions  to  society  will  be  always  remembered  by  the  public. Therefore,  those  who  have  worked  with  and  contacted  these  great  men  wrote  memoirs  to express  their  admiration,  and  at  the  same  time  contributed  valuable  literature  to  future generations.

1.2 Significance

Throughout the project, there are four aspects of significance:

The selected text involves many American cultures, such as memories of historical events in the southern United States, racial discrimination, etc. Through this translation practice, the translator hopes to not only improve translation capabilities but also spread American culture to the outside world and help more and more people gain a deeper understanding of America. 

In addition, Memorial Drive: A Daughter's Memoir is the author's re-exploration of the past or her unforgettable childhood: the major trauma caused by the death of her mother and the various ups and downs caused by her own social status. In the face of this kind of pain, the author did not choose to escape but mustered the courage to record them with a pen. This brave spirit is worth learning from each of us.

Furthermore, after verification, this material has not yet been translated, and there are not many biographical translation studies under the guidance of context theory. For the author, this is a rare opportunity for practice. On the one hand, it can promote her own translation theory study; on the other hand, this project would improve the author's writing ability.
