2.2 Studies on The Nuosu Book of Origins

The Nuosu Book of Origins, one of the Four Great Creation Epics of the Yi ethnic group, has been part of Yi history and culture for thousands of years and has been passed down orally in the Yi region of Liangshan, Sichuan Province. It is the story the Nuosu Yi people of Liangshan tell themselves how they fit into the spirit world, the natural world, and the social world. The book exists in many versions, all of them written in the Nuosu syllabic script, mostly in five-syllable lines. People recites or performed parts or all of it on important ceremonial occasions.

In 2019, The Nuosu Book of Origins was published in English for the first time by the University of Washington. It took American translator Mark Bender and Yi poet Aku Wuwu ten years to translate Yi language into English. 

Nowadays, academic researches on The Nuosu Book of Origins mainly focus on its cultural values, in terms of philosophy, history, and religion. Meanwhile, some tried to scrutinize its linguistic features as an oral epic; some others, however, looked deep into its literature significance, underlined by its characters and narratives.
