Therefore, during the translation process, it is important for the translator to maintain consistency with the author’s language style.

In achieving functional equivalence, the translator encountered many challenges. Due to the different thinking patterns of native Chinese and English speakers, sometimes this is hard to convey the exact meaning of the source text to the target readers, especially when cultural-loaded words and idioms occur. Therefore, the translator made in-depth research on the guiding theory and referred to some parallel texts to find the most suitable translation methods that can be used during the translation process.

4.1 Translation at the Lexical Level

Numerous academics have studied translation equivalence at the lexical level since the second half of the 20th century (Asim, 2020). As words typically have different meanings in source texts and target texts due to differences in culture, context, and other factors, translation at the lexical level is a difficult problem for translators. The following examples show some methods that translators can take to address this issue.  

4.1.1 Conversion


During translation practices, conversion is a prevalent method adopted by translators. According to Meng (2009), it is not advisable to focus solely on the equivalence of syntactic forms and the correspondence of parts of speech when translating English into Chinese. Instead, it is important to comprehend the way in which the source language functions and to effectively convey that in the target language. Therefore, sometimes it is necessary to convert a noun into a verb, a verb into a preposition, etc.

ST: Although it sometimes seems that a great deal goes into making the end product in the best way — one that highlights all that the coffee has to offer — it’s really rather a simple process.

DT: 虽然有时候为了做出一杯能突出咖啡所能提供的一切的完美咖啡似乎需要大量的投入,但这真的相当简单。

TT: 虽然有时候为了做出一杯能体现出所有品质的完美咖啡似乎很费功夫,但这真的相当简单。

Analysis: The word “deal”is a noun while “offer” is a verb. When translating the two words into the target language, something needs to be changed. That is because the verb “提供” (offer) doesn’t make sense when considering the subject is coffee. On the other hand, “大量的投入” (a great deal) seems too rigid in the context.
