1.2.1 Psychological Basis

Good communication must be the transmission of information in thought. “Every word people say or every body movement people pose reflects their inner world” (Maslow, 1943: 382). Therefore, in order to express their thoughts or feelings, people tend to apply both verbal communication and nonverbal communication. 

The  complex  psychological  activities  between  language  and  psychology  are inextricably  linked.  “Psycholinguistics  is  a  discipline  that  studies  the  relationship  of language and psychology. It has only a few decades of history” (Maslow, 1943: 381). Many human behaviors are related to language and psychology, but psycholinguistics emphasizes the  psychological  process  of  observing  cognition-based  language  use.  Psycholinguistics mainly  uses  psychological  perspectives  and  methods  (including  cognitive  processes, emotions, wills, personalities, etc.) and the science of psychological characteristics to study the  psychological  processes,  mechanisms  and  development  of  people’s  acquisition  of language.  “Psycholinguistics  has  four  sources  including  philosophy,  psychology, linguistics  and  neurophysiology”  (Maslow,  1943:  395).  It  studies  the  psychological processes of language acquisition, applications and individual language activities, namely the psychological mechanism of verbal production, comprehension and communication. “It is an interdisciplinary system in which the psychological process of language acquisition and application is the main research object. At another level, the psychological process is a process that the inner thoughts determine the outward expressions” (Maslow, 1943: 387). When people are happy, they may laugh with their hands on their stomachs. When people do not know the answer to a question, they will say that they do not know. When people feel sad, they will show a gloomy expression.

Chapter Two Research Design

2.1Research Questions

In  order  to  analyze  the  effects  of  nonverbal  communication  on  English  teaching  in primary  schools  and  find  out  some  problems  existing  in  teachers’  nonverbal communication  in  English  classes  and  give  some  implications  to  improve  teachers’ awareness on how to apply nonverbal communication effectively in English classes, this research will mainly discuss the following three questions:

(1)  How  do  English  teachers  teach  English  effectively  by  applying  nonverbal communication?
