for A Woman:the Strugglefor Suffrage in the Wild West,which was published in January 2020.The text is a historicaltext,which contains a great number of proper nouns and proceeds logically.Those twochapters focus on the journey of Esther Hobart Morris,the first female magistrate judge in theUnited States,who fought for the right to vote in Wyoming in the western region around the1860s.Moreover,the two chapters mainly give priority to how the female suffrage movement spread inWashington and Oregon.

2.2 Translation Stage

In the whole translation process,every stage is tightly linked with other stages.Even thetranslator did a great deal of preparations,the translator still encountered many difficulties inthe process of translation.At the same time,some translation tools are also used in thetranslation process.

2.2.1 Difficulties in the Translation

Before translation,the translator read the whole book to have a general idea about thewhole book.After reading the book thoroughly,the translator decided on which chapters tochoose as translation practice.Considering the coherence of the text,the translator chose thefirst two chapters as the translation materials.While reading,the translator found that therewere many historical facts that required a broad wealth of historical background knowledge.In the meantime,the translator identified the difficulties that would leads to misunderstandingfor target readers.The difficulties are summarized as follows.

1)On the lexical level

As the source text is a historical text,it contains a large number of historical events arepresented,which involves many geographical names,organizations,conferences andnewspapers.Some of those words can be found in the corresponding translation,such asSouth Pass City,Seneca Falls,NewYork,World’sAnti-Slavery Convention,National WomanSuffrageAssociation(NWSA).However,most of them are difficult to find translation version,for instance,Oregon Trail,Ada County,Oregon Argus,The Pioneer,so the translator had tofind a way to translate these nouns,whether it is literal translation with annotation,ortransliteration with annotation or other skills.

3.1Analysis at the Lexical Level Based on Functional Equivalence

The word is the main carrier of language meaning(Shu Dingfang,2008).Therefore,precise words for the translation are the key to improving the quality of the target text.Fourequivalences are put forward in the functional equivalence,one of which is the equivalence atlexical.In the following part,the translator discusses the functional equivalence at the lexicallevel from three translation strategies under the guidance of functional equivalence:omission,annotation,and conversion.
