Under the Whispering Door,written by the best-seller author of New York Timesand USA Today,T.J.Klune,was published by Macmillan in 2021,nominated as oneof the“Best Books of 2022”by Buzz Feed,and also nominated for the Locus Awards“Top 10 Fantasy Novels of 2022”.Chapters 6,7,8,17 and 18 are the most excitingparts of the book,and the content of these chapters is logically related.Therefore,thetranslator takes these chapters as a source text.

“A fantasy text is a self-coherent narrative which,when set in our reality,tells astory which is impossible in the world as we perceive it.”(Clute&Grant,1999).Nomatter what the story is about,the fantasy that engages the reader is incredible.Theelement of fantasy draws the reader in and guides them into a fictional world.However,it is always difficult to convert fantasy elements from one culture intoanother in the translation of fantasy literature.The translator has to employ variousmethods to avoid affecting the coherence of the source text.Moreover,the translatoris the first reader of the translation,so the translator’s understanding of the source textwill inevitably affect the expression of the author’s creative intention and the cohesionof the translated story.The differences between Chinese and Western cultures mayhinder Chinese readers from fantasizing,the translator should get close to the targetreader’s world and take into account their cultural background and idiomaticity whentranslating,so that they can easily enter the world depicted in this fantasy novel.Fromthis point of view,the translator agrees with Peter Newmark’s“reader-centered”viewon communicative translation.Therefore,the translator translated the source textunder the guidance of communicative translation theory(shortened as CTT thereafterward),and wrote the translation report to analyze and review the translationdifficulties.

1.2 Significance of the Report

The significance of this report lies mainly in the following two points:

First of all,this report can provide a case reference for the translation of fantasyliterature.Chinese translators have maintained a passion for translating Western fantasy literature since classics such as The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit weretranslated into China.With the continuous development of fantasy literature,countlessfantasy translation researchers have emerged.The translator hopes that this report canbe used as a practical case for other translators.Through the analysis of translations ofthe latest fantasy works,the translator expects to convey positive and innovative ideasto translators who love the fantasy novel,and hopes to achieve the purpose of learningfrom each other and jointly promoting the development of fantasy literature.
