With the increasing speed at which our society operates, the competition among peers increases by leaps and bounds. Then some biographical books which had not been translated as Chinese on the Internet over the past year were selected by the translator. In May 2022, Just as I Am was finally chosen as the translation material for the graduation thesis.

In view of the requirements for writing the report, first, it is prerequisite for the translator to have a clear understanding of the characteristics of the source text. Second, it is necessary for the translator to pay attention to the language phenomenon and determine the translation theory as guidance. Third, when it comes to the problems in translation process, it is vital for the translator to use proper solutions or translation techniques to deal with these questions.

1.2 Choice of the Text

The book, Just as I Am, is an autobiography and memoir written by a legendary actress, advocate and humanitarian, Cicely Tyson who is renowned for her portrayals of strong female characters. The reasons why this book is chosen by the translator as translation material are represented in the following parts.

Firstly, from the perspective of the translator, the original text is biographical text, a genre that the translator is interested in. The biographical text generally is narrated in a natural way with down-to-earth language, so it is easy for the translator to learn some English words and expressions. To some extent, however, the easier the original text may be, the more difficult the translation process may become. That is to say, the translation needs to be accessible to more readers, which can improve the translator’s translation skills.

Secondly, from the perspective of the writer, the main writer of this book is Cicely Tyson, who died in 2021, aged 96 and received the Presidential Medal of Freedom, which is the highest civilian honor in the United Stated. The translator once read an article about her obituary in The Economist, a famous foreign journal, and that her attitude towards her career and life gave a profound impression on the translator. Thus, it is like a magnetism to attract the translator to know more about Cicely Tyson and her extraordinary life.

Thirdly, from the perspective of the readers or our society, aged in nineties, Cicely Tyson recalls her whole life by stages and tells some history about discrimination, representing unyielding character and standing against racial and sexual discrimination.
