3.1  Theoretical Framework

To wrestle with the equivalence of the two languages, Nida’s functional equivalence theory is an option. This report takes this theory as the theorical guidance to conduct the translation practice.

3.1.1  Brief Introduction to Functional Equivalence Theory

Of translation theories, the theory of “functional equivalence” proposed by Nida, a prominent American translation theorist, is used widely. The theory of dynamic equivalence is his major contribution to translation studies. The concept is first mentioned in his article. In his noted work Toward a Science of Translating, Nida (1964) explains dynamic equivalence translation as follows: 

one is not so concerned with matching the receptor-language message with the source-language message, but with the dynamic relationship, that the relationship between receptor and message should be substantially the same as that which existed between the original receptors and the message. (p. 159)  

This theorist also distinguishes the translation aims between “formal equivalence” and “dynamic equivalence”. Nida (1964) thinks that “Formal equivalence focuses attention on the message itself, in both form and content” and believes that “A translation of dynamic equivalence aims at complete naturalness of expression, and tries to relate the receptor to modes of behavior relevant within the context of his own culture” (p. 159). 

4  Conclusion

4.1  Findings

As the theoretical foundation of the report, functional equivalence theory pays attention to provide maximal comprehension and appreciation on the part of the intended audience. The report is written to analyze the translation techniques of cohesive devices based on the translation practice of biographical book Just as I Am. Under this theoretical framework, the translation progress and study are advanced in a smooth manner by dealing with translation barriers.

Halliday and Matthiessen (2004) categorize the types of cohesion in English into two zones, grammatical cohesion and lexical cohesion. The former one includes reference, conjunction, ellipsis and substitution. The use of cohesive devices in English is more frequent than that in Chinese as the two languages have differences at syntactic level. In the selected text of the biographical book, grammatical cohesion is presented more obviously than lexical cohesion. Among grammatical cohesion, reference is used frequently, bringing out various translation problems.
