ed in the world literature. The study of Hongloumeng in the English-speaking world is inseparable from its translation in the English-speaking world, which has gone through four stages: genesis, development, flourishing and climax. Compared to other novels, Hongloumeng has had a rough and tumultuous journey to the West, as it was first introduced to Westerners and translated overseas half a century after it was written. The early translators were not scholars or sinologists, but missionaries to China and diplomatic and consular officials in China.

According to documentary sources, the first translation of Hongloumeng in the English-speaking world began in 1812, when Robert Morrison, an English missionary, wrote a letter to a friend, translating several passages from the fourth chapter of Hongloumeng and attaching them to the letter and sending it to the friend. However, the real documentary evidence is that in 1815, Morrison also used the dialogue between Miao Yu and Shi Xiangyun as an example to explain the word “Miao” in the English version of Hongloumeng.

Chapter Six Causes of the Differences from Socio-translation Studies Perspective

6.1 Field Influence

Bourdieu‟s sociology emphasizes, on the one hand, that individuals or individuals do not refer to individuals in the biological sense, but are people in society, participants in a specific field, who compete with each other in the field.

According to Bourdieu, the structure of social space can be divided into philosophical, political, scientific, and literary fields, which constitute a constantly competing field of power, i.e., a structural space with the ability to distribute capital and determine the structure of society.

6.1.1Field of Power

A field of power is a whole of various fields, a meta-field, a site of struggle. Under this theory, both social space and the state are seen as a field of power, organized by the relations of the ruling class. The field of power has a dominant position. The translator, Hawkes, is in the power field with the publishers, patrons, etc. “The participants in social activity generally follow the principle of profit, and profit-seeking is the ultimate goal of all intellectual practice.”
