3.1 Translation of Adjectives

3.1.1 Applying Four-character Structure

The use of the Chinese four-character structure makes the expression rhythmic, and adds rhetorical and artistic beauty. In contrast, English is hypotaxis, and its expression is clear and explicit. Therefore, when translating from English to Chinese, the use of the four-character structure is more accepted by Chinese readers. The author of the source text uses abundant adjectives to describe creatures and natural landscapes, which can be translated into four-character structure in Chinese according to the situation.

Conclusion

Cheng Hong (2011: 12) said that “The most typical and distinctive genre of the nature writing is still the non-fiction prose in which the writer describes his or her experience of nature in the first person.” This kind of work is expressed by the simple and convenient literary technique of prose with beautiful language, sincere emotion and free writing. So how to translate this work well is a great challenge for translators. Therefore, the translator must form a natural translation that conforms to the characteristics of the target text on the basis of correctly understanding and expressing the meaning of the original text.

In the process of translating The Oak Papers, the translator carefully analyzes the text characteristics and sentence structure and finds solutions by reading literature in order to improve the quality of the translation. To make Chinese expression more aesthetic, the English adjectives can be translated into four-character structure in Chinese, or be converted parts of speech and expand semantic meanings. Some short and descriptive English attributive clauses can be translated into the pre-modifier in Chinese with “的” and placed in front of the antecedent.
