Chapter Two Parody as a strategy to Deconstruct
2.1 The Transformation of Narrative Perspective
Narrative perspective at all times plays an important role in the analysis offiction.Narrative perspective can reflect the psychological and narrative intentions ofthe author and characters.Susan S.Lanser is a pioneer and leading figure in feministnarratology.Early on,in her book The Narrative Act:Point of View in Prose Fiction(1981),Lanser began an attempt to integrate the formal study of narrative withfeminist criticism.Rather than using the term“focalization”as proposed by GérardGenette,Lanser follows the concept of“point of view”,emphasizing the connectionbetween narrative perspective and ideology. In her view, narrative perspective is notonly about technical aspects but also about ideological aspects:it is closely related toidentity, psychology, gender, culture, etc. Therefore, the narrative perspective plays acrucial role in the expression of the ideas and values of the author and the characters in the work. This sub-section will focus on the distinctive female narrative perspectivein the novel.
There is no doubt that male characters have always been the protagonists ofShakespeare’s narratives. For example,in Hamlet, the strategy of patriarchal narrativeruns through all the time.Hamlet praises his father like:“Hyperion’s curls, the frontof Jove himself,An eye like Mars,to threaten and command;A station like the heraldMercury,new-lighted on a heaven-kissing hill”(Shakespeare,2008:137).Hamletsees his father as the perfect man created by many gods,a hero to be worshiped.Incontrast, the image of his mother in his mind is:“frailty, thy name is woman!”(Shakespeare,2008:21).By contrast,a clear distinction is made between the higherand lower status of men and women. In this way,Shakespeare lays the groundworkfor a masculine narrative in terms of narrative perspective:the male is the main themeof the entire tragedy, and all the plot revolves around the male world, which ispresented to the reader from the male point of view.As a result, female characterswomen like the Queen and Ophelia only play a supporting role in moving the plotforward. In this way, both tangible and intangible narrators are influenced by maleexperience and male positions, establishing the authority of patriarchal narratives.Byqualifying the narrative perspective, patriarchal narratives establish gender bias andnaturalize patriarchal superiority as truth, which is a major component of patriarchalconstruction.By limiting the narrative perspective, patriarchal narrative establishesgender bias and naturalizes patriarchal superiority as truth, which is a majorcomponent of patriarchal construction.
2.2 The Displacement of Narrative Voice
In Shakespeare’s plays, men are the subjects of verbal narratives and monologues, while women are narrated in very few words, and when they are narrated, they areentirely linked to the subjective likes and dislikes of men.Furthermore, the femalecharacters are often set in the court, where male power is most concentrated. They aresubjected to the most direct 本论文由英语论文网提供整理,提供论文代写,英语论文代写,代写论文,代写英语论文,代写留学生论文,代写英文论文,留学生论文代写相关核心关键词搜索。
