and demanding discipline of patriarchal discourse, whichresults in the aphasia of the female roles. On the one hand, they are subjected to malerestrictions and oppression, directly losing the opportunity to speak and becomingsilent;on the other hand, even when they want to speak, they become, voluntarily orunder duress, the spokespersons of patriarchal discourse.Ophelia and Gertrude, forexample, are unable to make their voices heard and remain“voiceless”in a patriarchalsociety. As a result of her defiance and disregard for the established rules ofpatriarchal society,Desdemona is eventually subjected to a frenzy of reprisals fromthe patriarchy. However,on her deathbed, she chooses to defend her husband bysaying the words:“Nobody--I myself.”

In Fictions Of Authority:Women Writers And Narrative Voice, feminist narratologist Susan S.Lanser uses the concept of the“narrative voice”to emphasizethe close relationship between the vocalist and the listener. Moreover, the conceptitself implies a critique of identity and power.By drawing on this concept, feministnarratology has developed a powerful critique of feminist gender politics.Lancerargues that“voice”has both technical and gendered meanings. In her view,“theseemingly simple technique of which narrator a novelist adopts assumes an importantrhetorical role in expressing the main idea of the work and conveying a value position”(Wang Liya,2019:106).Lanser classifies narrative voices on a discursive level intothree types:authorial voice, personal voice, and communal voice.Of these,“thepersonal voice refers to narrators who are interested in telling their own stories”(Lanser,2018:17).Adopting a personal voice, the narrator demonstrates the reality ofher position by recounting and transforming the story of her own experiences, thusacting as a narrative strategy to rebel against male authority. As Hutcheon suggeststhat“Postmodernism establishes, differentiates, and then disperses stable narrativevoices(and bodies)that use memory to try to make sense of the past.It both installsand then subverts traditional concepts of subjectivity”(Hutcheon,2000:118).AngelaCarter’s Wise Children employs the narrative strategy of personal voice, with thenarrative voice throughout being that of the elder Dora Chance, breaking the sense ofauthority reflected in the male narrative voice.
