Fewer but better studies indicate that researches on Li’s short stories are meaningful but there is still a research space for her short stories. 

Chapter Two Literature Review

2.1 Studies on Short Stories of Yiyun Li Abroad

Currently, the foreign scholars focus on the two collections of short stories titled A Thousand Years of Good Prayers and Gold Boy, Emerald Girl. Some other short stories that have not been codified in the collections have not been found in any studies. The studies of the two collections are divided into book reviews and new value of new immigrants. Among those studies, Extra, A Thousand Years of Good Prayers, The Princess of Nebraska, Immortality, Kindness, Gold Boy, Emerald Girl are frequently investigated by scholars. And among those short stories, A Thousand Years of Good Prayers (2007) and The Princess of Nebraska (2007) have been adapted into movies, directed by the famous Chinese American director, Wayne Wang (1949-), who also is the director of The Joy Luck Club (1993) and Snow Flower and the Secret Fan (2011). 

Speaking of book review, it mainly discusses the spiritual and existential plight of human beings. And when it comes to the spiritual plight, there are studies on the insane, unhappy families, the burden of kinship, loneliness, and morality. Raymond Zhong has attributed the spiritual plight of Han Feng, Siyu and Mo Yan in Gold Boy, Emerald Girl and Kindness to their unhappy families and their sorrowful parents (Zhong, 2010). The sentence stated there can  illustrate the idea of the scholar, “Broken couples beget wounded children, who in turn carry their ache into their own families and communities” (Zhong, 2010). And with the description on kinship in Extra, After a Life and The Princess of Nebraska, Eleanor Henderson stresses that the burden of kinship is related to the immigrant experience in American literature (Henderson, 2006). According to the overall lineage of Li’s short stories, Ann Hulbert argues that the characters feel solitary after their trials and tribulations and they are eager to find new shelters to rest their loneliness (Hulbert, 2014). Speaking of the theme of morality, Laura Albritton argues that Li’s collection of short stories, A Thousand Years of Good Prayers has pervaded the depictions of moral dilemmas (Albritton, 2006). 

2.2 Studies on Short Stories of Yiyun Li at Home

The lack of Chinese transcriptions of Li’s works has contributed to the paucity of domestic studies of Li’s works. Accordingly, the thesis compares the existing domestic studies of Li’s works as follows, especially the studies of Li’s short stories. 

Compared with the studies abroad, the similarity lies in that the scholars at home also focus their attention on the two collections of short stories, A Thousand Years of Good Prayers and Gold Boy, Emerald Girl. Unlike other works that depict Chinese people’s feelings of thought and identity in the process of wandering in foreign countries, Li’s works are based on a modernized background and write about the plight of mankind in different aspects, so the research area and directions involved in the studies are different.
