4.1 The Types of Loneliness in Yiyun Li’s Short Stories

From different aspects and levels, the six selected short stories describe different kinds of loneliness, such as the loneliness of aphasic, the loneliness of marginal man and the loneliness of rootless people. In Li’s works, loneliness is an eternal topic, and the descriptions of loneliness always mix with the author’s own experience. In the next three subsections, the embodiments will be discussed in the three dimensions, and each supported by two related short stories. And in the last subsection, the thesis will stress the connections among those different kinds of loneliness. 

4.1.1 The Aphasia among Family Members

Aphasia is not only a common term in medical research but often appears in Chinese American literature. In the beginning, aphasia is a medical term, which means a language disorder resulting from brain damage, especially in the comprehension and expression of speech symbols such as phonology, semantics, and graphemes (Gao, 2006). Etymologically speaking, “a” in aphasia means “not”, “pha” is equal to say, to speak, and “sia” is used as an affix to indicate a certain state, which refer to inability to speak normally. What’s more, aphasia is often used as a rhetorical device in writing. In literary works, the word “aphasic” means that people cannot communicate and interact with others in a smooth and healthy manner.
