关键词:硕士学位论文开 题 报 告 书Traumathe Two Standalone Novels

lly, she was fascinated by depicting black woman's hard living, traumatic experiences in the societies with strong racial discrimination and more importantly, their hard efforts to fight back to win respect and independence. We can find many traumatic depictions in Bulter’s books, which play important parts in the progression of the plots.
主要研究内容     This thesis aims to compare the trauma descriptions in Butler's two particular novels in order to find by what techniques Bulter usually employs to write the trauma and the deep meanings Bulter wants to express behind the trauma.

The thesis is composed of five parts: the introduction, the conclusion and four chapters.

The introduction consists life and achievements of Octavia E. Bulter and the significance her works mean to the literary world. As a typical characteristic of Bulter's works, traumatic descriptions of the protagonists can be found in nearly all books of her, which worth a good study. The introduction also includes current study and theories on this point and the value of this study and the structure and general idea of the thesis.

The first chapter studies the descriptions of trauma in some of Bulter's works. It seems that traumatic sufferings are what her protagonists must endure in the stories. This may be due to Bulter's overall pessimistic view of the world. She delivers infective effects of pain to the readers by her own style and many skills. The thesis will make analysis of it by taking examples from various of her books. Bulter employed her own descriptive skills to depict the trauma in order to create more powerful and direct impact to the reader to feel the pain. Her sentences are short, simple and direct. This reflects the reality that when the protagonists are with sharp pains, their minds are straight and they don't want to speak. Then the first person narration and psychological descriptions make the feeling more real to readers.

Chapter two articulates the descriptions of trauma in the two books of Bulter, Kindred and Fledgling. Being one of her earlier books, Kindred skillfully described the trauma a modern black woman, Dana, experienced in the age of antebellum, trough several time travels. She was summoned unconsciously to that age in order to filfull her duties to protect the slave owner Rufus in order to ensure her current existence. The heroine in the end escaped from the bad experiences, but lost an arm, which was told in the very beginning of the prologue of the book. Trauma is where the story began. The same with the novel of Fledgling. The protagonist, Shori, came awaken with serious physical injuries and amnesia. Though with serious physical and psychological trauma, we will find as the stories continued, the heroines are brave and persistent to find ways out in the very complex, hard and hostile multiracial environments, which can represent Bulter's feminist ideas. By comparison of the two novels, we find that

the trauma depicted by Bulter can be a good reflection what black women have to suffer in different multiracial societies of the America. The suffering is huge and maybe disastrous to the lives of the black woman, but feminine power is also strong and getting stronger as they learn and fight. And we think this is what Bulter wants to tell to her readers in general.
