Moreover, ok, so and and are the three most frequently used discourse markersby junior high school English teachers, which were used in a variety of ways to helpfacilitate teaching progress in structural, referential, interpersonal and cognitivecategories. A number of examples are extracted from the corpus to illustrate theirmain functions. Structurally, ok is used as a turn taker or turn giver, topic switcherand a means of opening or closing topics, introducing a follow-up question, making asummary. On the interpersonal level, ok is used to show responses and checkunderstanding. Similarly to ok, so can be employed as a topic opener and topic shifter.It can also be useful in the structural category to return to the main thread,summarize opinions, introduce a rewording as well as preface questions orinstructions. On the referential level, so can indicate consequential relationshipsbetween utterance. Referentially, and helps in indicating contrastive or coordinaterelations and expressing addition. Its structural functions range from taking orkeeping turns to marking sequences and continuity. Cognitively, and can beinterpreted as a way of denoting thinking process. These functions can help teachersbetter organize classroom teaching activities, explain teaching content and linkteaching process more naturally and smoothly.
