摘要:Needs analysis refers to the design staffs and teachers investigate and analyze thestudents’ subjective and objective demands in the process of curriculum design andimplementation, so as to determine the contents the students need to learn.
2. Literature Review
2.1 Definitions of Students’ Needs
Before we discuss the needs analysis, first of all we should know what is needs.Although many foreign scholars have discussed the concept of the needs, there hasn’t reacheda consensus. Widdowson (1981) summarizes the needs respectively from the goal orientationtheory and the process orientation theory. From the goal orientation theory, the needs refer tothe learners’ requirements to school or work. From the process orientation theory, the needsrefer to the activities that the learners participate in the course. Mountford (1981) explains thatneeds is the learners who want to learn from the language course and their requirements to thecontent of the course. Brindley (1989) argues needs as “desire” or “want”. The needs also canbe said as lacks. Berwick (1989) uses very popular and universal words to describe the needsas the gap between the present level and the future level. Robinson (1991) thinks the needs asgap, that is, the knowledge and the ability which the learners do not have.

2.2 Definition of Need Analysis
According to Richards, Pratt & Weber (1985), needs analysis is to understand themessage why the learners learn a language, what aspects of the language need to learn andwhat degree needs to teach,. Pratt (1980) defines needs analysis as “an array of procedures foridentifying and validating needs, and establishing priorities among them”. The phrases “arrayof procedures” and “validating needs” make this description different. The phrase “array ofprocedures” shows that all kinds of tools that colleting information should be used. Thephrase “validating needs” means that needs are not fixed. If they are identified, theyfrequently require to be checked to make sure that they keep the valid needs for the learners toparticipate in. Brown (2001) argues that needs analysis is through a comprehensive collectionand analysis the information of the subjective and objective to determine the reasonablecurriculum goal, which meets the students’ language learning needs in a certain teachingsituation.
