Chapter TwoLiterature Review
The present chapter firstly introduces previous studies on the translation ofchildren’s literature at home and abroad. Secondly, previous studies on Bing Xin’stranslation are also reviewed. By sorting out literature collected on research status andacademic achievements, limitations and breakthrough will be pointed out so as toexplain necessity and significance of the present research.
2.1 Research into the Translation of Children’s Literature
Since the 1980s, research into translation studies on children literature have beensteadily increasing in the world and been published in related authoritative journals.Among them, a variety of children’s literary works have been involved as researchobjects, but their research purposes and focuses differ from each other. The presentpaper will introduce the research status of translation studies on children’s literaturefrom the following aspects: Poly-system Theory and translation of children’s literature,translation
history of children’s literature, illustrations and words in children’s literature,Ideology and censorship in the translation of children’s literature, translation strategies(cited in Li, 2014).Even-Zohar studied the status of the translation of children’s literature in thepoly-systems and was against regarding children’s literature, horror literature, andtranslated literature as unimportant literary systems or styles (cited in Munday, 2001).While Zohar Shavit applied the concepts “acceptability” and “adequacy” developed byGideon Toury to translation studies on children’s literature and indicated that translators,because of the peripheral status of children’s literature in literary system, couldmanipulate the original text in various ways as long as the translation was based on twoprinciples. The first one was to benefit children, and the second one was to make itunderstandable for children to read (cited in Li, 2014).

2.2 Previous Studies on Bing Xin’s Translation
Bing Xin was an important writer and translator during the May 4thNew CultureMovement and she was also the most famous female writer in Chinese modern literature.In nearly 80 years of literary career, Bing Xin has created a large number of excellentliterary works which have influenced generations of readers. Accordingly, researches onBing Xin’s literary achievements have also been fruitful since the 1980s. On the otherhand, Bing Xin’s translation achievement was great, and the total number of words shetranslated added up to more than two million, among which some translation works havebecome classic and been accepted by readers at home and abroad. However, comparedwith studies on Bing Xin’s literary works and achievements, studies on Bing Xin’stranslation are far from enough. In the last decade, translation studies on Bing Xin’stranslation thoughts and practice emerged, and there has been an increasing growth inrecent years.As for the study of Bing Xin’s translation in journals, the author of the presentpaper searches for key words or themes in CNKI, there are twenty five related studies
