ve nor a passive victim. Instead, she dared to fight against genderoppression and racial oppression. In the plantation, she dared to fight against strongblack males. When her land was occupied by Blake, who was stronger than Cora.“She stood there, heaving. Both hands on the hatchet. The hatchet wavered in the air,in a tug-of-war with a ghost, but the girl did not falter.” (Whitehead, 2018: 19) Andshe also defied her white master. In order to protect Terrance, a black slave as Cora inthe plantation, Cora bent over the boy’s body like a hero and held the cane in her hand.Besides, her escape with Caesar also challenged the master’s authority. Moreover, shehad a strong desire for freedom. There were many dangerous and challenges duringthe journey. Each state was unknown and she never knew what would happen next, but she feared nothing of it and never gave up. Even when facing the hunter Ridgeway, she defeated Ridgeway wisely. At last, as the myth hero she had finished heradventure.

2. 2 Deconstruction of the Stereotyped White Images

The traditional slave narrative was written or edited by white abolitionist, andthey usually revealed slavery’s atrocities to act as propaganda. Therefore, whitepeople in traditional slave narrative are typically portrayed as ruthless and cruel figures. In The Underground Railroad, Whitehead rewrites the stereotyped whites intraditional slave narrative. He created the kind owner, kind Christian and someabolitionists.

Firstly, Mrs. Garner was a kind slave owner who lived in the North. Caesar washer slave in Virginia small farm. Mrs. Garner treated her slave in a special way whichmade Ceasar completely different from other slaves:

She did not agree with the popular arguments for slavery but saw it as a necessary evilgiven the obvious intellectual deficiencies of the African tribe. To free them frombondage all at once would be disastrous—how would they manage their affairswithout a careful and patient eye to guide them? In her degrees, she prepared them forthe liberation that awaited them, for she had pledged to set them free upon her death.(Whitehead, 2018: 60)

Chapter Three Formal Restructuring of Slave Narrative inThe Underground Railroad

3.1 Intertextuality

Intertextuality, as a category of writing strategy, is often used in neo-slavenarrative. French literary critic Kristeva is the first to present the term of“Intertextuality”. According to Kristeva, “any text is constructed as a mosaic of quotations, any text is the absorption and transformation of another.” (Kristeva, 1996:146)

The Underground Railroad also presents a concern and legacy of importantthemes in African American literature, American literature, and even the classics ofworld literature. Th论文英语论文网提供整理,提供论文代写英语论文代写代写论文代写英语论文代写留学生论文代写英文论文留学生论文代写相关核心关键词搜索。
