3.1 Memory Distortion during Individual Growth

Memory  is  the  consequence  of  interpreting  the  past  with  one’s  own  understanding  and emotion,  which  can  be  vividly  reflected  in  siblings’  relationships.  The  relationship  of  adult siblings can be one of the most irreplaceable relationships, given that it is intractable to have an individual who has known each other since childhood,  like Josie and Judith in the book. 

A  Guide  for  the  Perplexed  depicts  how  emotion  significantly  shapes  and  even  distorts one’s memory. It is pretty astonishing to find that sisters develop rather different memory of the same childhood. In modern America, Josie is a Jewish inventor of a Genizah. This software program  comprehensively  archives  every  moment  and  detail  of  users’  lives,  bringing  Josie fortune and fame and making her sister sick with envy. Then, Josie is encouraged by Judith to accept a consultant position at the Library of Alexandria. Soon after Josie arrives in post-Arab Spring Egypt; however, she is kidnapped by Malek, a gangster who wants to win the election by introducing Josie’s software to every Egyptian. When a video of Josie being hanged, Judith plans to take over Josie’s family and company. In a word, she wants to be Josie. She moves into Josie’s  house  and  wins  Josie’s  husband,  Itamar’s  independence  and  trust,  and  their  daughter Tali.

Conclusion

Memory is particularly significant to Jewish people. By the remembrance of Jewish history, Jews perpetuate the existence of Jewish peoplehood, strengthen the Jewish identity in American society, and enhance the close relationship between family members. With Assmann’s cultural memory  theory,  this  thesis  focuses  on  Jewish  memory  and  emotion  in  Dara  Horn’s  novels, exploring the specific connotation and carriers of Jewish memory in different social and cultural environments. And this thesis draws a conclusion from three levels as follows.
