Chapter 5 Nazneen's Transcendence in External Situation

5.1 Nazneen's Changes in Reality

Under the oppression of patriarchy,Nazneen was always in the other position ofeconomy and culture in external situation.After the awakening of self-consciousness,Nazneen began to change herself to shape a new situation that did not depend on men.Shebegan to break out of the previous situation defined by male standards by trying to workoutside and establish new social relationships.

5.1.1 Attempting to Work Outside

Men's monopoly on economic autonomy deprives women of productive value.Therefore,women have to rely on men,which leads to the loss of the meaning of women's existence atthe social level.From the perspective of existentialist philosophy,Beauvoir proposed that'itis through work that women span most of the distance from men,and only work can ensureher specific freedom.'（Beauvoir,1997:543）Women working outside can free themselvesfrom men's domination.They can perceive their self-worth at work and discover their ownstrengths,thus gaining a sense of satisfaction and accomplishment.When Nazneen realized atthe spiritual level that she should not live according to the male standard,she began to make achange in real social situation.Her change was first reflected in her attempt to work outside.

Brick Lane is a literary work with profound significance and influence created byMonica Ali.It tells a story that a woman who had been oppressed by patriarchy to pursueindependence and transcend herself.The experience of the heroine was consistent with thetheories of'the other','immanence'and'transcendence'in Beauvoir's Existentialistfeminism.Based on this theory advocated by Beauvoir,this thesis analyzes the experience ofheroine Nazneen in her search for the true meaning of existence from being-in-itself tobeing-for-itself.

Firstly,this thesis expounds Nazneen's internal and external situation.Nazneen wasdeeply trapped in the predicament of immanence and the other position in internal andexternal situation.In internal situation,Nazneen was deeply imprisoned and suppressed by thetraditional ideology in patriarchal society.She internalized the ideology of the Holy Qur'anrevered by Islam and formed fatalistic cognition that people could not control their fate.At thesame time,the traditional Bengali culture made her accept the idea that men were superior towomen.She voluntarily accepted the wrong ideology of materialization.This false perceptionmade Nazneen constantly define her existence with male standards.It trapped her independence and immanence.She lost the subjective and initiative self-consciousness.Nazneen was completely reduced to a subordinate in internal situation and unable to extricateherself in such a rigid existence state.
