摘要:This thesis mainly employs an investigation based on the Corpus ofContemporary American English (COCA) to verify the vitality and prospect of ChinaEnglish lexis from the perspective of memetics. Moreover, in performing the researchoperations, some qualitative methods of analogy, observation, classification,comparison and interpretation for data analysis are implemented.
Conclusion
Memetics provides a new insight to explore the study of linguistics. The currentresearch of China English lexis based on COCA has left some questions in this thesis.It is suggested that further research could be undertaken in the following areas:Theoretically, in the light of memetics, the research of China English could beundertaken at other levels, such as syntax and discourse. Considering the relationsbetween syntax and discourse features of China English and people’s Chinese thoughtpatterns, the rules of meme replication and propagation may help us recognize howChina English is formed at these levels. Therefore, it could broaden the scope of thestudies of China English to cover more fields in further research.
Methodologically, the research of China English from the memetic perspective,either at lexical level or syntactical and discourse level, calls for quantitative orempirical research to confirm its scientific correctness. The corpus-based research is anewly emerging scientific method for linguistic study. The research of China Englishbased on corpus could clearly show the distinctive features of China English lexis,syntax and discourse by comparing the similarities and differences between ChinaEnglish and native English. COCA adopted in the current research is not only a goodresearch tool for the studies of China English but also a good platform for Englishlanguage teaching and research. Besides, it is of great significance to construct anative corpus such as China English Corpus for comparison research.Practically, it is advisable that college English teachers apply the memetic modelof input of China English and Chinese culture to their English teaching practice tobeneficially cultivate students’ China English awareness and creatively enhance theircommunicative competence in a global context. The writer hope that some teacherswould conduct their own researches to further testify the effectiveness of the application of memetics in China English input in college English teaching.Although memetics has found applications in some other aspects in linguisticresearch, such as advertising, network speech, etc., the study of China English in thelight of memetics is merely at its beginning stage. It is only the first step of a LongMarch, but it is a step forward and there will be another great leap in the future.
