But she finds that her husband cannot take any interest in her scholarly temper of mind. On the other hand he wishes that Madeleine should share his academic problems and enlighten him as far as possible. Herzog admits that he relied completely on Madeleine's intellectual judgment when he was working on his study of Romanticism. And he further wants that she must abandon her own intellectual pursuits for the sake of his academic achievements. He exhibits indifferent attitude to the studies of Madeleine. When his friend Shapiro asks him the title of her thesis he tells him that he does not know what her research is about. Yet he expects her to know everything concerning the new book he is writing. When Madeleine is speaking on her research subject, he feels drowsy and sleepy and he fools her by giving an impression that he is listening to her discussion but really shows no interest. Herzog's conte.mptuous attitude towards her research makes Madeleine pursue it more intensely in order to show that she could be successful as well.

Herzog is clearly intimidated by Madeleine's intelligence. In a letter to his scholarly friend, Shapiro, he writes:

I understood that Madeleine's ambition was to take my place in the learned world. To overcome me, she was reaching her final elevation, as queen of the intellectuals, the cast iron bluestocking. And your friend Herzog writing under this sharp elegant heel.

Prof. Ada Aharoni is critical of Herzog'attitude towards Madeleine and justifies the stand taken by her. She writes:

As if there were only one place in the academic world and that she has to throw him out, before she can usurp that place! Her knowledge is so threatening to him that he would much have preferred to keep her unlearned. From his point of view, if she has a thirst for knowledge he is ready to introduce her into his own intellectual pursuits, and does not understand why she does not accept his benevolent offer and discard her career in favor of his.

Madeleine has been criticized as something cold and aggressive. However these are certainly 'the symptoms of the unfulfilled and unsatisfied woman, who feels she is not given the opportunity to 'grow', and much of her frustrations stem from the fact that Herzog thwarts her intellectual drives and goals' (Pradhan, 2006:69). Herzog admits that Madeleine undergoes a state of crisis which might have been cause by his neglect of her academic success.

The intellectual pursuit of Madeleine is a compensation for her lack of emotional fulfillment in the company of her husband. She becomes sick of his behavior within two years of the marriage, and falls in love with Herzog's best friend Valentine Gersbach. However, Madeleine's betrayal has its root in her husband's personality Herzog is probably the most typical representative of Bellow's unworldly heroes. As Victoria Sullivan says that Herzog represents 'the intellectual who can analyze any situation with devastating precision and irony, but who is incapable of almost all simple pleasures一acutely aware and acutely unhappy simultaneously' (Sullivan, 1975:113).
