Madeleine plays the role as a 'new woman' who makes her own choices rather than being dominated by a masculine society. She manifests in her personality and her actions the 'free' woman who struggles to achieve her own growth and her independent career, as well as her desire for real love. She also demonstrates many moral weaknesses that every human being possesses. Her self-consciousness and life energy, whether take the form of intellectual capacity or malicious schemes against Herzog, make her one of the best feminine figure in American literature.
2.3.2 Minna in The Dean's December
As the marital relationship between Madeleine and Herzog breaks up, we cannot resist to wonder: Is it possible for two highly-educated individuals to achieve some kind of intellectual compatibility and harmonious conjugal life? Joseph F. McCadden laments the bankrupt marriages in Bellow's novels by saying that 'throughout Bellow's fiction there is no relationship where the man and the woman meet one another on equal term and create an enduring bond that leads to emotional stability' (McCadden, 1980:8). This conclusion should be revised on the publication of The Dean's December. In this novel, Bellow offers his most affrmative female intellectual image一Minna Corde, who, with the love and support of her professor husband, Albert Corde, establishes an equal status at home as well as independent academic career.
Minna is the most independent and high powered woman character we have had till now in Bellow's novels. She has a brilliant scientific mind and is powerful in her own field. She is a distinguished professor of astronomy with an international standing. She is fully satisfied with her academic work. 'She put in a ten-hour day, never missed a visiting lecturer, a departmental seminar. Her tutorials, rehearsed far into the night, must have been like concerts'(Bellow,1982:253). Besides the intellectual career she has accomplished, Minna finds real love in the company of a husband and set up a stable family, which prevents her from 'being sidetracked by love ai}airs or divorces as most of Bellow's male intellectuals are' (Liu Wensong, 2004:59).
3.Conclusion
However, Minna's immersion in scientific research makes her very unworldly. As Albert's nephew says, Minna is 'charming but a little spacy [as an astronomer]' (Bellow, 1982:78). Compared with her impracticality, her husband Albert, in his position as dean of students, appears to be more practical than her. Sometimes he mocks at her involvement with the study of space and complains that she is more at home 'in the stars' than on her planet. He is not happy about Minna's ignorance of hisChicagoarticles concerning the decline of modern civilization and the growth of crimes in modern life.
