Therefore, it is necessary for English language teaching to carry culture education in English class. Culture should become an important element in foreign language teaching in order to communicate appropriately in English.
2.3 Culture can reduce the negative transfer of native culture in cross cultu

For a long time, we put undue stress on imparting language knowledge such as grammar, vocabulary and so on, and ignored the differences between China and the west. In the course of English teaching, we haven’t introduced English country’s culture reflected in vocabulary, social habits and value system when passing on language knowledge. Due to that, the students have difficulty in getting away from the effects of native language culture in cross culture communication, and they can’t transmit and receive the information which language carries. Consequently, they fail to communicate with each other. For example, Chinese people usually say, “Where are you going?” when they meet by chance. But English people think it is a way of prying into their private life of others. When you say to an English young girl: “How pretty you are!” She will respond like “Thank you very much!” but Chinese girl think it is impolite. Therefore, some embarrassments often happen in the course of communication.
The reason for the communication failure is the transfer of native culture knowledge. In the course of communication, the communication participant use Chinese habit and mode of thinking. As the result of it, he isn’t understood or misunderstood the opposite side’s meaning. That’s to say, the negative transfer of native culture in cross culture communication happens. Foreign language is the second language system under the condition of native language has set up firmly. Every nation has his own himself culture. In the foreign language teaching people pay more attention to inside culture system, separating culture from language, this cause foreign language teaching emphasize on language form, especially the study of written language. The main purpose is to grasp grammar knowledge and drills separating from culture situation. Because ignoring target language’s national character, native language culture habit is applied mechanically in foreign language. So culture interference happens. Linguist Lado refer to “we will not teach language well if we don’t teach culture background. Language is a part of culture. Therefore, not understanding culture model and norm, we can’t learn language really.”
Culture background difference between China and English country cause the negative transfer of native language. How to reduce the culture interference and eliminate such kinds of negative transfer is a problem we should pay attention to.
