Chapter One Introduction


1.1 Research background

In the twentieth century, modern linguistics isintroduced to China, many books and writings on the phonetics and investigation ofdialects have been translated into Chinese.Nowadays, English has become an international language, and with the rapideconomic development of China, the importance of learning English well has been acrying need for Chinese students. Definitely, correct and clear English pronunciationplays an important role in the successful across-cultural communication. (Van Weerenand Theunissen, 1987).Thus, there is no escape from the acquisition of at least thefundamental elements of English pronunciation unless a learner expects to deal withEnglish only in its written form.Each language has its unique rules, and each syllable has its own specific rulestoo, either in the distribution or in the composition. Millions of Chinese students wantto learn English as well as they can. For some it is only a matter of reading andwriting it, but many students want to be able to speak English well, with apronunciation which can be easily understood both by their fellow-students and byEnglish people.Language consists of three elements: pronunciation, vocabulary and grammar, inwhich, vocabulary and grammar are shown through pronunciation in spoken English.The common problem shared by English learners is that after so many years oflearning, most of them still rely on memorization of spelling form but neglect thepronunciation of the words. They are likely to study the grammar and vocabulary, butnever practice pronunciation. If we really want to learn English well, a good master ofpronunciation is essential.


1.2 Purpose of this research
Speech is a habit, and the phonetic habit of native language usually influencesthe foreign language study. Second language learners need to find out the differencesbetween their native language and the foreign language, and to form their newlanguage habit. Chinese sound system has both similarities and differences with thatof English. The differences between them have a great effect on Chinese students’English phonetic acquisition. Influenced by their mother tongue, Chinese studentsoften transfer the characteristics of Chinese speech sounds to English pronunciationacquisition.In the sound system of English, consonants are more complicated to imitate, thesubtlety of differences in the articulation is not easily perceived by naked eyes andears.
