2.1.1 Plato andAristotle's Views on Metaphor

2.1.1.1 Main Views

Plato is a typical deprecator, he does not advocate the use of metaphor. Platobelieved that metaphor is an inaccurate expression of truth, which will keep peopleaway from the truth. He saw metaphor as a misuse of language by poets and sophists.Unlike Plato, Aristotle was a typical admirer. He admired the use of metaphor inlanguage. He believed that the poet's ability to intuit the similarity between things andexpress it through language was a sign of genius. Aristotle (1954) pointed out thatmetaphor is the use of the name of one thing for another, which is a deviation from theliteral use of words. In addition, Aristotle also emphasized the positive role of metaphorin rhetoric. He believed that metaphor can make language clear and charming. A propermetaphor is like a riddle, which can train people's insight and make people happy.

2.1.1.2 Its Shortcomings

Aristotle made a great breakthrough in the study of metaphor, but there were twoobvious shortcomings: first, he only saw the expression of metaphor in language, anddid not see the relationship between metaphor and human thinking raise the study tothe cognitive level. Second, he limits metaphors on the level of vocabulary.But we seethat metaphor not only exists in the use of words, but also in sentences and texts.

2.2 Research Status of Metaphor at home

The sages in ancient China see the existence of metaphor, but its researchperspective always stands on the position of rhetoric, did not know metaphor’s role onpeople's thinking and active function of human activities, and the Chinese ancient sages’studies on metaphor can be seen as lack of independence, rigor, and unsystemic. It wasnot until the 1990s that scholars such as ZHAO Yanfang (1994) and LIN Shuwu (1994)systematically introduced the metaphors based on the theories of foreign cognitivelinguistics and their research achievements and the study of metaphors attractedextensive attention from domestic scholars. Especially from the late 1990s to the early21st century, the academic circle, especially the foreign language circle, set off a greatupsurge in introducing foreign cognitive linguistics theories and metaphor theories. Atthe same time, domestic scholars began to study the application of metaphor theorybased on cognitive linguistics in foreign language teaching. Generally speaking, most ofthe studies on metaphor in China were initially conducted from the perspective ofrhetoric. The main characteristic of metaphor research on the basis of cognitive linguistics in China is its short history but rapid development.According to our statistics,there were 310 articles on the application of metaphor theory to foreign languageteaching in 21 years (1997-2017), among which the first article on the application ofmetaphor theory to foreign language teaching was 'metaphor: an effective approach tovocabulary teaching' published by WU Xianyou and YI Yongzhong (1997).
