1.2 Research Objectives 研究目标
The main objectives of current thesis mean to make a few contributions on critical discourse analysisin the field of social political news reporting. It attempts to answer the following two questions: (1) Whatsorts of ideologies are conveyed by the Chinese and American news reports on the issue of 2011 DurbanClimate Change Conference by use of the language strategies? (2) Are there any similarities between twocountries’ news reports on issues of global climate change? If there are, what are the similarities of this sortof reports? If there are not, what different features are presented?To achieve the goal, the current thesis conducts a comparative analysis of news reports collected fromtwo different news resources China Daily and The New York Times on Global Climate Change Conference.Two self-built corpora are put together with the reference corpus BNC news for further comparativeanalysis. WordSmith Tools V5.0 is used to carry through the research developing the critical languageawareness of readers and minimizing the negative influence of the media.

1.3 Organization of the Thesis 论文的组织结构
The thesis consists of five chapters. Chapter 1 gives a brief introduction of the backgroundinformation and the goals this study intends to achieve, as well as the organization of this paper. Chapter 2makes a literature review of the previous studies of Critical Discourse Analysis both at home and abroad.Chapter 3 presents the theoretical framework including Fairclough’s three-dimensional modal, Halliday’sSystemic-Functional Grammar, and methodology which mainly refers to corpus-based approach. Theresearch questions and research design will be given thereafter. Chapter 4 consists of two parts in total. Thefirst part is the description and interpretation of the data conducted from two corpora, then the explanationis given from the political aspect and the economic aspect. Chapter 5 lists the findings and the implicationof this research proceeding with the suggestions for the future study.
