o provide a satisfying explanation of hedges inEnglish news from the perspective of Verschuren's Linguistic Adaptation Theory, whichfunctions as a rather appropriate pragmatic theory to study hedges in English news report,since hedges prominently reflect variability, negotiability，and adaptability of language,which are the key notions of this theory. The employment of hedges is essentially theresult of choice-making as well as the result of adaptation to the mental, physical, andsocial world, which are the essence of this adaptation theory.News, both printed on newspapers and read on websites today, are still the mainmedium of communication, exerting remarkable influence on our social life. It isgenerally accepted that accuracy is the one of the basic principle of news reporting. Itseems that the use of hedges may go against it and the vagueness and imprecision shouldbe avoided in news reporting. However, hedging, as a matter of fact, has become aphenomenon that can't be ignored.

1.2 Purpose and Objective of the Research研究目标和目的
The basic purpose of this thesis is expected to present a relatively systematical anddetailed analysis of the use of hedges in English news reporting under the framework ofVerschuren's Linguistic Adaptation Theory. With a view to the purpose above, thefollowing questions are going to be answered in this thesis.1. Why hedges are allowed to occur in English news?2. In what types of news can we find hedges and their functions?3. What is the generation mechanism of hedges in English news and give detailedexplanations.4. What pragmatic functions can hedges fulfill in this process?In terms of objectives of the thesis, three aims are to be achieved.Firstly, based on the previous researches, it will try to propose the definition andtaxonomy of hedges for the convenience of this study.Secondly, we want to make clearer how the external and internal factors influencethe process of linguistic choice-making in news reporting.Thirdly, it will explore what pragmatic functions hedges can realize in English newsreporting.

1.3 Methodology and Data Collection数据收集和方法论
The present research adopts descriptive and qualitative methods to analyze hedgesin English news reporting.The data and examples in this thesis are randomly selected from several major fieldsof news, which contain politic news, economic news, social news and cultural, as well aseducational news. Altogether 34 items of English news published in the year of 2011 and2012 are selected randomly from two newspaperwebsites;andwww.nytimes.com. Several reasons can support the choice. First of all, as the titleindicates it is about the use of hedges in English news reporting, and these twonewspapers: Los Angeles Times and The New York Times are the most influential dailynewspapers in America and even throughout the world because they have a large numberof readers and circulation. The reports in these newspapers are fantastic and timely, itreports the breaking news and analysis on politics, business, society，both world andnationals and more. They are also well-known for their in-depth coverage of the newsevents and their reliability of the source of news items.
