Abstract
This study is aimed at exploring the cultural impact on the translators’ choices of translation strategies. In the light of Susan 代写英语翻译论文Bassnett and André Lefevere’s (1990) notion of 'cultural turn' which advocates putting translation in a socio-cultural context, my argument is that cultural differences can greatly affect the choice of translation strategies, especially when the source language and the target language are distant, such as English and Chinese. A case study is presented in which three Chinese versions of an English novel A Tale of Two Cities are compared in terms of translation strategies and the causes for such choices. On the basis of the surprising commonalities that have been found in my analysis, I come to the conclusion that the translator manipulates the target text according to cultural constraints of the target society. The translator's choice of translation strategies is closely linked to the cultural difference between the source and the target culture. As rewriter, the translator produces an acceptable target text considering the target readers’ cultural and ideological backgrounds.

Literary translation has no longer been confined to the linguistic level since the scholars advocating cultural turn led translation studies to the macro study of the socio-cultural background. Advocated by Susan Bassnett and André Lefevere (1990), the school of cultural turn in translation studies tackles translation issues from various cultural perspectives. The translator as rewriter and decision-maker needs to take the linguistic and cultural factors into account.
