inese to English Translation——The Coherence between theEnglish Translation of Six Chapters of a Floating Life by Lin Yutang and MartinLuther s Translation Regulations”, in this paper, Liu Xu, Chen Anping providesmaterials for the study of literary language used in ancient China (刘旭, 程晏萍2002); Liu Chang compared the translation version by Lin Yutang with that by Blake, and concluded that domestication and foreinization mutually compensate each otherin his paper “domestication and foreignization”(刘畅 2004); By studying the culturalimage, allusion, customs in the translation version by Lin Yutang, Liu Fangsummarizes that Lin mainly used foreignizaiton in translation for preserving theoriginal information to a great extent in her paper “Foreignization and Domesticationin the Translation of Chinese Literary Works into English—With an Analysis of LinYutang s Translation of Six Chapters of a Floating Life” (刘芳 2003); Zhong Huilianshows that Lin Yutang combined the use of domestication and foreignization todisseminate Chinese culture and promote culture exchange in her paper “Lin Yutang sTranslation of Six Chapters of a Floating Life from the Perspective of SkoposTheory” (钟慧连 2004) .The above mentioned are all studies from the micro perspective. In addition tothese, there are also many studies from other perspectives. For example, Li Yongkangput Six Chapters of a Floating Life translated by Lin Yutang in a whole culturalcontext, and discussed from the perspective of intercultural communication in herpaper “The Cultural Interpretation of Lin Yutang s Translated Works” (李永康 2001);Ge Xiaoqin, indicates that Lin Yutang s life attitude plays an active role in selectingthe text and translation strategies in their paper “Choice and Strategies in Translationin Relation to Life Philosophy” (葛校琴 2001); Sun Huijun shows that translatorshave to take into account the various norms in the target culture and emphasize thetarget culture s influence on the selection of text and translation strategies in “TheOperation of Translation Norms as Seen from the English Version of Six Chapters of aFloating Life.” (孙会军 2004).1.2 Research QuestionsAs mentioned above, the focus of translation studies lies generally on thetranslation theories, translation criteria and the skills of translation, namely “how totranslate” are discussed, but the centre of the translation “translator” itself, is lack ofsystematic and deep research.Since Nineteen seventies, an important turning point has appeared in the westerntranslation research and the cultural orientation has begun to prevail. The culturalturning point has made the translator s subjectivity a new research topic. However, thetranslator was not pushed to the center where his leading role and function washighlighted until our scholar Hu Gengshen put forward “translator-centeredness” inhis book the Approach to Translation as Adaptation and Selection. Hu Gengshenmade a definition of translation from the perspective of translator as: Selectingactivities of the translator s translational selection adapting to the ecologicalenvironment. This definition improves that whether adaption or selection, theseactivities are all completed by the translator (胡庚申 2004: 101)Therefore, from the perspective of the translator s subjectivity, Lin Yutang stranslational selection in Six Chapters of a Floating Life will be appreciated fromlinguistic, cultural respects and will be discussed in terms of translation strategies. This
thesis intends to discus
