He translatedmany Chinese Classics: Six Chapters of a Floating Life, the Wisdom of Confucius,The Wisdom of Laotse, etc. These works play a vital role in disseminating Chineseculture and make the westerners know Chinese culture well. At the same time, thereare also many books concerning translation theories written by Lin Yutang. One of themost systematic and famous books is “on Translation”. Inheriting from the oldergeneration, he put forward the translation standards of “Faithfulness, Fluency, andBeauty”. In addition to this, many studies from the perspective of linguistics andpsychologies done by Lin Yutang are preciously valuable.Among his translations, Six Chapters of a Floating Life translated in 1999 is hisvery successful one. The original version of Six Chapters of a Floating Life written byShen Fu in 1808 is widely read among Chinese people. Lin Yutang translates itbecause he likes the heroine named “Yun” and her husband “Shen Sanbai”. In theforeword of his translation version he describes “Yun” as “one of the loveliest womenin Chinese literature.” Lin Yutang appreciates the writer s description of pure love,beauty and Chinese unique culture of calm and ease. He wonders that what kind of thepoor scholar Shen Sanbai was and how he gained pure love form his lovely wife. LinYutang believes that the essence of Chinese Philosophy of life happens to beembodied in the daily life of the couple. Lin Yutang is the first person who translatedSix Chapters of a Floating Life, after that there exist co-translation done by Bai Lunand Jiang Suhui and the version translated by Shirley Black. Generally speaking, it can be discussed into two respects. One is from themicro perspective and the other from macro perspective.
