However,some of the examples about variations discussed in this thesis are not convincingenough. As a matter of fact, the author conducts the text analysis all according to hisown understanding about the English version without any reference to the westernreader’s feedback and the reception of the novel, leading to the relatively lack ofcomprehensiveness and objectivity since the fact that the author is a Chinese wouldmake people doubt the accuracy of his judgment about the effect of the translatedversion aroused in the western readers’ minds.In a word, no systematic study of the translation considering the whole processincluding the selection, the production and the reception has been conducted on thebook yet.

1.3 Howard Goldblatt and His Translation of the Contemporary

Chinese LiteratureHoward Goldblatt is regarded as the chief translator of Chinese contemporaryliterary works. With a good command of both Chinese and English, Goldblatt hasmade great contribution to the going-out and spreading of Chinese contemporaryliterature and culture by translating the works of more than 20 Chinese writers fromthe Chinese mainland, Hong Kong as well as Taiwan.
