摘要:本文希望通过较为全面和客观地分析对《我的帝王生涯》英译本,对中国文学“走出去”所应采取的翻译策略提供一定启示。

Conclusion


Translation is not merely a norm-governed activity; it’s also creative in essence.The creative feature of translation owes to the subjectivity of the translator involvedin it. Prompted by certain purposes, the translator would settle on the suitabletranslation strategies to make sure the smooth entering of the translated work into thetarget culture. The conclusion that conformity to norms lead to awards and violationof norms incur sanctions is never definite due to the instability of norms that thenotion “correctness” is always relative—“linguistically, socially, politically,ideologically” (Hermans 2007:85), largely subject to the changes of the socio-culturalbackground. However, each times has its own dominant translation norms andobeying those norms will to a large extent ensure the success of the translation.The current dominant norms for the translation of the contemporary Chineseliterary fictions favor the target-oriented translation strategies that put the targetreaders’ needs and expectations in the first place. The criterion for the text selectionand translation strategies for most of the contemporary Chinese literary works iswhether they will meet the needs of the target culture and be popular in the market.(吴赟 2012:186) The translator Howard Goldblatt’s idea that readership is theprimary factor taken into account for translation strategies and that the translation ismainly for cross-cultural communication( 付 鑫 鑫 2011:2) also strengthen hisinclination to conform to the dominant translation norms. As a matter of fact, some ofHoward Goldblatt’s ideas on translation share common ground with the currentdominant translation norms.
