Chapter One Task Description

1.1 Introduction to the Translation Task

Entrusted by Dolphin Books,the translator translated the whole book Run,Dai Erniu!with about 78,000 words from Chinese to English within 6 months.Run,Dai Erniu!is alocal children’s literature work which tells the life of rural children in the process of socialtransformation and the New Rural Construction.The report focuses on the first and thesecond chapter of Run,Dai Erniu!,totaling 19,982 Chinese words.

The first chapter introduces the story background,the development of rural tourismunder the new rural construction,and the protagonist,a country boy Dai Erniu.The smallmountain village in Hongcaoba where Dai Erniu lives has become a popular resort becauseof the cultivation of patches of pink muhly grass.For it,villagers here begin to start smallbusiness.However,Dai Erniu’s father Dai Chengcai seems special.He adheres to his dreamof inventing the'grass skateboard'with the only support of Dai Erniu.And in this process,Dai Erniu happens to find an expensive phone.The thread of the second chapter is DaiErniu’s rural life and the endeavors he does to find the owner of the phone.Dai Erniu is acontradictory character.He is timid,stubborn and tangled,but he is also brave,honest andkind.For him,the process of finding the owner is extremely bumpy,but he has to stick to itjust as his father insists on his ideal.The excerpts have the following merits:firstly,theyfully show the main content and core values of the book;secondly,they cover the mostrepresentative features of local children's literature.

According to the requirements of Dolphin Books,the book should be translated withhigh quality for publication.The translator should grasp the whole style of the original book.After translation,the translator should submit the translation to the publisher for review andmodify it as recommended.

1.2 Analysis of the Source Text

Considering that the“local”expression way of local children’s literature works willchange with different regional environments,a close analysis of the source text is madefrom the following three aspects:stylistic features,lexical features and syntactic features.

1.2.1 Stylistic Features

The source text has the characteristics of both local literature and children’s literature.In local literature terms,it is rustic and plain with directional aesthetics.This kind of uniquelocal aesthetics can be summarized in one word,“soil”—the closer the author is to the soil,the real rural life,the easier it is for his creation to find the source of strength.

These two sentences present a full-bodied local flavor with pristine language.Here,using simple and short sentences to describe the environment highlights the nature and thereality.These kinds of natural expressions can instantly bring people into the rural lifewhich lies in the memory,for“soil”is something that engraved in every Chinese gene.
