Chapter Four Case Analysis

4.1 Difficulties

When the author did the interpretation work for the first time, she encountered many problems. After compiling, analyzing, and reflecting on them, the author will list three typical problems here, which are information redundancy, unclear logical relations, and disfluency. 

4.1.1 Information Redundancy

Information redundancy refers to the same word or phrase being repeated twice or more times in a sentence or paragraph. In the process of Chinese-to-English consecutive interpreting, if the interpreter interprets the repeated parts the same, the whole interpretation will sound monotonous, redundant, and even more annoying to the audience. In Chinese, the same vocabulary is often used to make the sentence convey a fuller meaning or to emphasize a certain point, but English seldom uses repeated expression, and the repeated English interpretation of the vocabulary will make the sentence cumbersome and bloated. Therefore, in language communication, it will be annoying if we interpret the moderate redundant elements in Chinese into English word by word.  

Since this interpreting practice is to interpret lectures, the language characteristics are relatively relaxed and casual and contain a certain improvisation. Compared with more formal lectures, the language is more colloquial, which brings certain challenges to interpretation. And because the speaking style of Professor Jin Canrong is humorous and colloquial, there often appears repeated and redundant information in the lecture. Therefore, the author encountered many problems in interpretation. 

Chapter Five Conclusion

Through this simulated practice of consecutive interpreting, the author has a clearer understanding of the substance of the interpretation work. The author not only applied the knowledge learned in the book, which is the Interpretive Theory, to this simulation practice but also realized her deficiencies in professional ability through this practice. The practice of interpreting Professor Jin Canrong's lecture is a challenge but also an opportunity for the author. It is precisely because of this continuous interpreting practice that the author is more deeply aware of her lack of ability and knowledge and should be more diligent in her future studies and set high standards and strict requirements for herself.

First, as a complete interpreting practice, the author can achieve a better understanding of interpretation that has never occurred in class. It takes longer to practice with more stress and costs more energy. From this, the author can summarize the on-the-spot experience of interpreting and find her problems more accurately. Through this interpreting simulation practice, the author has a better understanding of the importance of pre-interpretation preparation. It is important to research the speaker's experience, clarify the correct English interpretation of the topic of the lecture, and professional terminology related to the topic. The second gain is the use of interpretation solutions.
