2.1.1 Yanshi Jiaxun and Its Translation in Foreign Languages

Yanshi Jiaxun has been mainly translated into four foreign languages. They are respectively Japanese, Korean, Russian and English. All these translations have revealed the value and importance of this work. 

In the middle of tang Dynasty, Ji Bei Zhen Bei, a Japanese student studying in Tang Dynasty, returned to Japan after finishing his studies and brought a volume of Yanshi Jiaxun to Japan. He also took it as a model and followed the style of Yanshi Jiaxun to write the book Private Education Like Gathering, which became the first book about family education in Japan.

Yanshi Jiaxun has already spread to South Korea, such as Korea’s traditional family instruction, Hou Song Zhan, had cited the content of Yanshi Jiaxun. Many Korean translators adopted Wang Liqi’s annotated version of Yanshi Jiaxun for translation. Among them, Che Shunfu’s Korean translation of Yanshi Jiaxun (Chinese-Korean translation) has been included in the Library of Chinese Classics. It can be seen that the book is mainly translated in recent years, which shows that the book has attracted much attention in the 21st century.

2.2 Previous Research on Hermeneutic Translation Theory

In this section, the present study will mainly review previous studies on the hermeneutic translation theory at home and abroad.

2.2.1 Previous Studies on Hermeneutic Translation Theory Abroad

In the 1970s, Schleiermacher first applied hermeneutic theory to translation studies.  He proposed that the translation was the interpretation. From then on, Translation theorists expressed their own opinions from the perspective of hermeneutics. 

George Steiner proposed hermeneutic motion in his work After Babel: Aspects of Language and Translation, in the second half of the 20th century, proposing that translation process was the process of language production and comprehension.  Steiner inherited the German philosopher Heidegger’s opinion about the relationship between translation and explanation and put forward the famous four movements of his hermeneutic translation theory. His work was recognized by the academic circle as soon as it was published. Steiner’s views marked the maturity of hermeneutic translation theory. Since then, western academic circle aroused a wide debate about the hermeneutic translation theory.

Peter Newmark, a famous British translation theorist, has made mention of “interpretive translation” many times in his Approaches to Translation in 1981. He proposed that some necessary interpretation was used as a supplement when the content of the text played a crucial role in clarifying the author’s intention, while the translator couldn’t get from the semantic aspect. He spoke highly of hermeneutic translation and praised it as “the most exciting translation”. (Peter Newmark, 2001: 35)
