4.1 Translator’s Trust observed in the Translation of Yanshi Jiaxun

According to Steiner’s hermeneutic motion of translation, trust is the first step in the translation process, that is, the translator recognizes the value of the original text and believes that it has translation value and significance. Only when such trust is formed, translator could make efforts to understand and interpret the source text, which is also the first step of human social communication. (Zhu Ruijun, 2009: 92) Establishing the trust between the translator and the work, in other words, is a prerequisite for the success of translation activities. 

Completed over 1,400 years ago, and thematically organized, Yanshi Jiaxun is the earliest surviving, most influential, and acclaimed work on family instructions, which is reputed as the pioneering work of its kind. It has a wide coverage of themes from Confucian, Buddhist, and Daoist doctrines and values, to codes of conduct, codes of family hierarchy, as well as his insights into social customs in the Northern and Southern Dynasties, and the arts and literature. The Chinese-English translation of Yanshi Jiaxun is one of the approaches to broadening the spreading of Chinese family instruction culture, and is of prominent significance to making Chinese culture known worldwide. It is one of the Chinese classics worthy of intensive research.

5.1 Major Findings

G. Steiner elucidated and summarized translating into trust, aggression, incorporation and compensation, in his work After Babel: Aspects of Language and Translation. He explained translation process in the light of the fourfold motion. Under the guidance of G. Steiner’s hermeneutic translation theory, the present study on the Chinese-English translation of Yanshi Jiaxun has the following findings.

The translating of Yanshi Jiaxun put the operation of G. Steiner’s four steps into practice adequately. 

1) Establishment of “trust” before translating. 

Before translating Yanshi Jiaxun into English, Zong Fuchang had a good faith in the work. Firstly, the work and its writer possess its own indispensable importance in cultural values and literature contribution. It is the earliest surviving, most influential, and pioneering work on family instructions. Comprising of 20 themes in 7 volumes, Yanshi Jiaxun had a wide coverage of themes, from Confucian, Buddhist, and Doaist doctrines, values, codes of conducts in private and social life, philosophy, arts and literature. Its writer Yan Zhitui was a well-educated noble in the Northern and Southern Dynasties.
