unication is regarded as a process of“ostensive-inferential model.”Although it was not researched explicitly for linguistics at the beginning,it quicklyentered the field of pragmatics.It was Gutt who first applied relevance theory totranslation studies.In his doctoral dissertation,Translation and Relevance:Cognitionand Context,Gutt explained translation studies with relevance theory.Based on relevance theory,Gutt(1991)proposed that the rationale of relevance translationtheory is that translation is a reasoning process,and the object of translation studies isthe human brain mechanism.Relevance theory has been regarded as necessary inpragmatics works abroad in recent years.By combining communication withcognition,relevance theory promotes the development of cognitive pragmatics andprovides a broader research space for pragmatic phenomena and communication froma new perspective.Despite the inadequacy of the communication-theoretic approach,Gutt(2014)still believes that“strong reasons to believe that translation is indeed besthandled as a matter of communication”(p.23).The emergence of relevance theoryprovides an extended perspective of cognitive linguistic research and systematicanalysis of many pragmatic phenomena.

4 Conclusion

This translation report takes the first three chapters of That Tyrant,Persuasionas the research object,takes relevance theory as the guidance theory,classifies andstudies the cultural default in the original text,lists specific translation methods forcultural compensation,and provides materials for research in similar fields.

Cultural default is of great value to translation studies.In faced with increasedcross-cultural works and intercultural communication needs,translators should beduty-bound to play the role of cross-cultural communication and adopt appropriatesolutions to solve the cultural default that causes the semantic vacancy of targetlanguage readers.Through relevance theory,the translator can explain the author’sintention and the choice of translation methods.The connotation of cultural defaultcan be reproduced to the greatest extent utilizing intra-text annotation anddomestication so that colleagues who eliminate the meaning gap of target languagereaders can accurately convey the author’s meaning and achieve the optimalrelevance.
