According to the Effort Model(Gile,1995),there are two phases in consecutiveinterpreting(CI):
Phase 1:L(Listening&Analysis)+N(Note-taking)+M(Short-term memory)+C(Coordination).
Phase 2:Rem(Remembering)+R(Note-reading)+P(Speech production).
In the interpreting task,long sentences with dense information in the sourcespeech forms a grave barrier for the interpreter to take notes,remember contents,andread notes.Sometimes,the interpreter missed several sentences.
Language is a part of the culture.Just as professor Juri Lotman(2009)remarkedin the book Culture and Explosion,“no language(in the full sense of the word)canexist unless it is steeped in the context of culture and no culture can exist which doesnot have at its center,the structure of natural language”.Therefore,interpreting isbridging cultural differences.Just as professor Wang Zuoliang stated in his book“When an interpreter or translator is working on some specific words,he or she isdealing with two different cultures”(1991).Many problems in Chinese-Englishinterpreting are problems in cultural differences,so overcoming cultural barriersshould be the focus of ensuring successful Chinese-English interpreting.
Conclusion
The above chapters have described the process of pre-interpreting,while-interpreting,and post-interpreting,the analysis of discourse,and the majordifficulty and solutions.Following the guidance of the Interpretive Theory,theinterpreter kept deverbalization in mind.When meeting culture-loaded terms,theinterpreter tried to decode the information and adopted skills,like paraphrasing.Theinterpreter wanted to convey his sense to the audience,not separate words.From thechapters,it can be concluded that as a translator and/or interpreter,one would facevarious obstacles during one’s learning or career journey.Some are language barriers,some are not language barriers.It is a must for translators and/or interpreters to have awide learning of theory and practice examples to get experiences.There is also roomfor the study to be improved.The corpus needs to be richer.Additionally,moreinterpreting practices may bring better result,because an excellent interpreter comesout of relentless exercise.
Here are some suggestions from the interpreter to student interpreters.
