1.1 Brief Introduction to the Source Text and Its Editors

This book edited by Prof. Salif Diop, Dr. Peter Scheren, and Dr. Awa Niang, sets out the many challenges and implications of climatic change for freshwater resources in Africa, including its rivers, lakes and aquifers. Under the influence of a range of human activities, the condition of water resources in Africa has been worse and worse for decades, transpiring in changes in water flow and variability, falling groundwater levels, changes in rainfall levels and timing, as well as overall decreasing water quality. Indeed, change is not new in this context. Climate change, however, will strongly accelerate the rate of change, affecting the ability of people and societies to respond in a timely manner to meet their own requirements. 

With this condition in mind, this book has been chosen to make a more comprehensive analysis of the influences of climate change on the condition of water resources in some of the most susceptible areas in Africa, including the solutions that may contribute to the reduction or mitigation of the influences of climate change. For that matter, while there is no quick fix to the pressures imposed on water resources by climate change, it is clear that increasing the resilience of ecosystems and communities to extreme events such as flooding, drought, and integrating climate change risks and opportunities into development decision making, will be important. 

1.2 Practical Significance of the Task

Climate change has strongly accelerated the change of water condition in Africa, affecting the ability of people and societies to respond in a timely manner to meet their own requirements. The translation of Climate Change and Water Resources in Africa promotes a better understanding of the dangers of global climate change and give a wake-up call to ourselves.

Functional Equivalence Theory is suitable for studying the translation absolute construction in scientific and technical texts, and reasons are as follow. In the first place, there are so many difficulties in translating absolute construction in scientific and technical texts as a result of the complexity of the text’s sentence patterns and structures. While the application of Functional Equivalence Theory will effectively transfer the spiritual style of the source text and ensure the formal style of the source text as much as possible. In the second place, given the linguistic features of scientific and technical text, under the guidance of Nida’s Functional Equivalence Theory, the translator will use more fluent and natural language to translate, effectively solve the problem of stiffness and stereotypes in translation, ensuring the naturalness and fluency of the translation. In conclusion, the previous research has substantial reference value for it can provide a new idea for solving the translation of absolute construction in scientific and technical texts, which has specific practical significance.
