Chapter1 Theoretical Framework

1.1 Literary Economic Criticism

The interdisciplinary study of literature and economics has been a hot topic ofacademic research in recent years.Literature and economics have an intertwinedrelationship from history.As early as the ancient Greek period,Aristotle’s ethicalphilosophy included the idea of economic ethics,and economics was rooted inphilosophy,history and other humanities disciplines.The interaction betweenliterature and economics can be roughly divided into three stages according to thefocus of theoretical research:the Marxist Literary Criticism,the New EconomicCriticism and the new historical Econo-Literary Criticism.

The Frankfurt School and leftist Marxist critics,primarily using literary andcultural studies methods,explore economic phenomena in works and criticize theeconomic logic of society.As attackers to the capitalism,the Frankfurt School usuallyadhere to Marxist political economy to criticize the political ideology,economicsystem and modern capitalist culture of capitalist society.

In Dialectic of Enlightenment(1947),Horkheimer and Adorno develop a criticaltheory of the“culture industry”in response to the spiritual repression brought aboutby the development of technological rationality and the abundance of material wealthin advanced capitalist societies.According to the Frankfurt School,the cultureindustry reflects the consolidation of commodity fetishism,the domination ofexchange-value and the ascendancy of state monopoly capitalism.“It shapes thetastes and preferences of the masses,thereby moulding their consciousness byinstilling the desire for false needs”(Strinati 56).Mass culture comprehensivelymanipulates people’s thoughts and value pursuits,depriving them of any aspiration tofreedom.The culture industry has degenerated cultural products into ideological toolsto justify reality and domination,and culture into a special commodity that no longernurtures the essence of human beings,but creates alienated human beings.
1.2 Early Modern England’s Political Economic Context

From the late Middle Ages to the early modern period,the social structure ofEngland was transformed from a feudal hierarchical society to a capitalist classsociety,and the economic structure was transformed from a traditional agrarianeconomy to a modern industrial and commercial economy.Economic developmentbecame the main driver of social change,with dramatic changes in the appropriationand distribution of social wealth,affecting the determinants of status,economicconventions and ethical concepts.

The social structure of 16th and 17th century England was hierarchical,and thefeudal lordship,with the nobility at its core,was the main form of social structure atthe time.Lordship is the position and authority of a lord.

Feudal lordship and other autonomous powers took over many of the functionsperformed in other times and places by the state,combining the private exploitationof labour–typically the labour of peasants–with the public role of administration,jurisdiction and enforcement.(Wood 10)
